Excellent food is many things. Take this advice to become a better cook.

If cooking with skewers is something you are considering, then you will want to know certain things. When using metal skewers, opt for those that are square-shaped or twisted; these will hold onto food better than round models can.

All of the prep work can be done ahead of time. Try to have the prep work completed before cooking; this is important. When you need to create a meal within a certain amount of time it can be stressful. If all of the prep work is completed well before the actual cooking begins, this will help alleviate some stress later.

You can start cooking simple meals out of a cookbook you can borrow from the library. That way you can try different meals that you can prepare and when you are done you can take it back. Experiment with several recipes, and give yourself the time in perfecting your cooking skills.

Cut your meat very thin and with the bias when you are stirfrying. It is possible that you may have a little trouble doing so in a time efficient manner. Take the meat out of the freezer once it gets firm, place a sharp knife at an oblique angle and start slicing.

Do not throw your sauce away. This simple trick can save it. Use a bowl to combine 1 Tbsp of corn starch with 2 Tbsp of water. Thicken the sauce by gradually adding this mixture to it. Don't add all the starch at once, and avoid stirring erratically. Either of these could over-thicken the sauce.

Regardless of the recipe, you can always bet that a fresh ingredient is better than its dried or frozen counterpart. Use whatever seasonal ingredients are available to create tasty dishes, which are also less expensive.

Garlic is a wonderful taste, but not such a wonderful smell to have on your hands. Rub your hands thoroughly on the interior of a stainless steel sink after working with garlic or other odoriferous cooking ingredients. Rubbing your hands on the stainless steel, helps remove the odor from your hands, so that every other food you touch does not smell like garlic also.

If you are going to be making chicken stock, it is best to go big or not at all. Make enough stock so that you can freeze the excess and use it later. A rich chicken stock makes a savory base for soups, stews and other dishes. After the liquid has cooled you can store it in heavy-duty freezer bags.

When you plan on using wooden skewers for cooking, soak them in water for 30 minutes prior to cooking. This is going to help ensure that they do not burn during the cooking process. Use two parallel skewers as opposed to a single skewer to keep food intact.

Always measure the amount of cooking oil you use. To have a lower amount of fat added to your cooking, make sure you measure your cooking oil carefully instead of just pouring right from the bottle to the pan. That way, you will know precisely how much oil is going into the dish you are preparing.

Find a convenient cool dark place for storing herbs and spices. Keeping herbs and spices in cabinets above the stove or other warm locations will cause them to lose their flavor.

Always make sure that the cooking utensils you are about to use are clean before starting any cooking. This is a basic but very important rule for any cook. If there is leftover food on your utensils from the last meal you cooked, it could contaminate the food you are making now. This could spread harmful bacteria into your food, and could be detrimental to your health.

Organize your materials as best as possible, if you desire to prevent the hazards of burns in the kitchen. When your cooking area is organized, you will be more productive and avoid errors. Unorganized cooks can easily make mistakes, lose or overlook buying important ingredients, and waste good money and food that could be used.

Food is something that everything needs to survive, so it has a special place in our culture. Take the insights you've been given here to elevate your standing with those who matter the most to you.
