Food is essential for survival. Why limit yourself to subsistence grade food? It's even more of a good thing to cook something that's great other than eating it. Here are some things you can use to bump your cooking skills up a notch.

If you are just starting out with cooking, consider doing your research at your local library. There are plenty of cookbooks with simple recipes available. Try different recipes until you come up with something that works for you.

Do not keep your herbs or spices in a place that is not cool and dark. Your spices will not last as long if they are exposed to light, heat or humidity. Your spices will have a longer shelf life and retain their good taste if stored in a dark, cool spot. If you use fresh spices, your food will taste better.

Garlic may be a tasty addition to your meals, but the smell that stays on your hands is a bit of a downside. To get rid of this odor, or any other strong cooking smell, rub your hands on the inside of your stainless steal sink. This removes the scent from your hands; it also prevents the odor from being transferred to other foods.

Cook your vegetables in chicken broth. Add extra flavor to your vegetables and keep them from sticking by using chicken broth instead of water. Chicken broth is easily purchased at almost every supermarket, and is quite inexpensive.

Preparing healthy vegetables can be easy if you choose to saute them in chicken broth. The broths adds some additional flavor, and reduces or eliminates the need to use cooking oil to prepare them. This is a delicious, simple way to cook fresh vegetables.

Be sure to read nutrition labels when purchasing ingredients. A lot of cooking supplies contain ingredients that could be unhealthy. Avoid ingredients that have high sugar and sodium content, because they can cause health problems.

If you are serving a salad with a meal where you have guests, do not pour the salad dressing on the salad, keep it on the side. Some people enjoy lots of dressing when eating salads so it is important that each person add their own dressing. It is also a good idea to offer several dressing choices.

If you need to cook a roast quickly, do not remove the bone. Cooking the roast with the bone still in it will help the inside of the roast cook faster. When the roast is done, slice it around the bone.

Make your own dried tomatoes. Simply cut them into 1/2 half inch slices, or cut lengthwise for Romas. Place on a cooling rack, cut-side up and lightly salt them. Set the rack on a cookie sheet in an oven at 190 degrees for a 10 hours. Once done, you can store them in your freezer in plastic bags. You can store dried tomatoes in an olive oil filled jar. Add fresh herbs for seasoning. Use them within two weeks of refrigerating.

Before you begin to cook, your utensils should be clean. Bits of food on your utensils could contaminate the dish you are cooking. Beyond that, dirty utensils allow bacteria to grow which could make you ill.

For an improvement to your pasta sauce, save some of the water used to cook the pasta. Save approximately 1/4 cup of water after cooking your pasta. As you begin to add your sauce to the pasta, slowly mix in the water. Amalgamation will take place in your sauce when you add the pasta water. The starch will give it the "creaminess" you desire.

When chopping fresh herbs, try sprinkling a bit of salt over the cutting board before you begin. The salt will keep the herbs on the board and add extra flavor as well. Do not over-salt by making sure you don't directly add any extra salt to the foods you're preparing. The salt that you sprinkle on the board sticks to the herbs and gives them just the right amount of flavor.

Learning to cook, and having fun with it at the same time, is as satisfying as eating. Use the information that is provided to sharpen your cooking skills and you will be able to better your cooking over time. Your cooking will show some vast improvements and all your friends and family will thank you.
